Yesterday was the literally hottest day ever. Seriously. It's was 103, and that broke the record here. Usually a hot day in a Tacoma summer mid 80's. Hardly anyone (except for Shana) has air conditioning around here so we all just have to sweat it out.
We spend a lot of time moving fans and shuffling kittens from room to room. We hide in the basement when we can. Walking around with a bag of frozen peas on your head helps too.
The kittens discovered the best place to cool their bellies is on the bricks in front of the fireplace, so that's where they took their afternoon nap.
Oh MY GOODNESS!
ReplyDeleteI want to come over and sprawl with the kittens!
Will Charlene let me?
Little hot kittehs!
ReplyDeleteWhew, I feel your sweltering! 103 is brutal. The babies are adorable sprawled out on the hearth!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a/c here in B'more, either. Fans and having an older house, designed for good air-flow, help.
The Maples are in the basement, where the tile floors stay quite cool. (The General Population use the bathrooms for cool lounging.) Fortunately, this has been one of the cooler summers in B'more for quite a while!
Lisa
My heart goes out to you, Craig, Drewey, Butterbean and the babies. The itties might allow you to "wash" them using a damp cloth getting them ever wetter then letting them drip dry. I am so happy to hear you have a basement available as a "better than nothing" cooling center. I have no a/c (New England) and can fully appreciate your misery. May your temperatures moderate soon!
ReplyDeleteAt least you have a basement.. We used to do that when growing up in Detroit with no a/c. Now I live in Sacramento, where it usually hovers around 100 a good portion of the summer, but no basements to be found (due to possible earthquakes, I guess). At least the a/c here works well. The cats are mad at me though, since this house doesn't have any floor vents like the last house, so no place for them to lay where it's nice and cool on their paws and tummies.
ReplyDeletepoor sweet babies! My 2 gigantly and magnificently furry cats were suffering last night - this weather - go back to arizona!
ReplyDeletechristine
It hit 116 here yesterday - this summer needs to let up soon or we are all going to bake like chickens!
ReplyDeleteI totally understand the fan shuffle. I've been doing the same thing....
ReplyDeleteLove the pics, but who's the black cat w/the orange scarf?
ReplyDeleteWe just got A/C after 22 years here w/o it, and boy oh boy are the kitties and I happy about it. Before that I used the aforementioned wet washcloth method of helping them cool down, and they'd sprawl like boneless cats ("Filet o' Kitty) on the entryway tile.
Sending you chilly (in a good way) thoughts.
OMG Laurie, that's the kind of weather we have here in Houston. I know it never gets that hot there...I went to WSU and my best friends lives in Pullman. That's Walla Walla weather there girl..I moved from there to Houston in 1982..wow.
ReplyDeleteWOW
Can you do what we do and put ice in the water bowls for the babies and mommy's and all the fur folk ?
We call it " Little Kitten Coctails" ..because we are slightly twisted..
Like Lisa says..ours flake out on the bathroom tiles..and we have a/c..thank goodness for ceiling fans.
Hugs and Headbutts from Houston
Awww, that is so sweet....
ReplyDeleteAww, melted kitties!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, so cute and so blissed out!
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or do these little guys look big??? Are they going to leave soon? gah!
Ah, they are sooo adorable. My kitties south of you in Portland are very unhappy too! Poor babies!! :(
ReplyDeleteStay cool.
Cheers!
My my! How big they are getting already! Kitties are right. A good stone or brick floor to lounge on is an excellent way to keep cool.
ReplyDeleteWell - the pics are way too cool! I wish y'all were, too!
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping your weather breaks, soon!
Ok, somehow you have our weather and we have yours - I don't get it. I remember visitng my grandpa out there in the summer and wishing our summers were like that - and now it is. But I didn't wish that you would have our yucky heat, so my wishing isn't to blame for that. I think I will wish for your weather to go back to normal and maybe that will work.
ReplyDeleteIn the comic What's Michael? there is a 'north country' Japanese man, who is in a roasting house because it's summer. He figures out that the cats will find the coolest spot and shoos them so he can sleep there.
ReplyDeleteAww...poor sweaty kittens. No cuddling today. Plenty of cool water and ice cubes.
ReplyDeleteHow are Butterbean and Drewey handling this horrible heat? Have they been relocated to the basement?
ReplyDeleteI'm back. I was thinking that some of the squillions of dollars raised for the Humane Society could be earmarked to install A/C in your house. Sort of an extension of the room(s) and amenities at the shelter. :)
ReplyDeleteBlech, that is just too, too hot.
ReplyDeleteThis photo makes me so envious. I'd love to have 3 sweet, sleepy kittens laying by my fireplace. I'd ask Santa... but he put his foot down after my Fleury came home furever last Autumn.
Aww, kitties, sorry you're so hot! My kitties' momma is a bit of a whiner (yes, that's ME), so we have had the central air on since May. However, the Golden Retriever lounges on the tile floors in spite of the air conditioning, so perhaps the thermostat isn't set low enough for his taste.
ReplyDeleteHope the hot spell breaks for you soon!
Oh my. Mostly I've been grumpy about the heat, but seeing pictures of sprawled kittens makes it somehow all worth it....
ReplyDeleteLinda P.
Aw, so cute!
ReplyDeleteIt was 106 outside here yestterday, and got up to about 85 in the house.
My silly cats fought over who could sleep in the bathroom and the entry hall -- the two *hottest* places in the house, right under the skylights. Especially in the spots of light. The bathroom was a good 10 degrees warmer than anywhere else in the house.
It's like when I'm melting, they're sprawled out going "ahhhh, Aveno!"
Carys
Oh man...we hope it cools down soon...but then again, if it does, the kitties won't sprawl out like they are now!
ReplyDeleteI never thought of using a bag of frozen peas on my head ... I'll try it. Can't wait for this heat wave to take its leave!
ReplyDeleteThe babies look exhausted! I'm very glad of the cool temperatures in London (UK) right now!
ReplyDeleteI just got done seeing on the TV news how Seattle has been having it's hottest day ever. I feel for you truly, take good care of yourselves, your family and your kits! Stay cool....
ReplyDeletePoor sweet, overheated kitties! I feel for you - even in San Antonio, where I lived for 20 years, 103 is hot -- and there's plenty of a/c there.
ReplyDeleteIt's cute how they stick together even when it's really to hot to pile on each other. I like the one snuggling up to the plaster cat -- betcha that was as cool as the bricks!
ReplyDeleteI feel with the kitties - here in southern Germany it's hot these days too ...
ReplyDeleteOn a more interesting note: While clicking lazily around in your link list, I just discovered that Cloudstomp posted lots of lovely new pictures of Agnes and Henry Pettibone on her blog in the past two weeks!
I hadn't been checking that for some time since there wasn't much going on there during the last months ...
So sweeet! We're in another region, and have and use A/C, but I love the look of my melty kitty at home on hot days too. So sweet and sleepy and defenseless against snorgling and toe tickling and nose kissing.
ReplyDeleteI read a blog about a husband and wife traveling with their cat. They filled up liter bottles with water and froze them for the cat to lay against. This might be a good idea for this situation also!
ReplyDeleteVery cute kittens.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the heat. Ugh. But we beat the heat with cold water wipe downs - stomach, back and head and ears.
I'm quite surprised Beanty let me but he loved it and actually perked up as he started cooling down.
I've never tried this, but I wonder if you put clean towels in the fridge let them get really cool, then tried to coax any of the kitties to sprawl on them--and if that didn't work for them, you could always fashion a cape for yourself.
ReplyDeleteThis is probably obvious, but regarding the chilled towels -- remove from the fridge before enticing the kitties. I should think before hitting "publish" --
ReplyDeleteOOOH OOOH - they can play in the bathtub with ice cubes! Kitties love ice cubes (and it'll cool down their wee feetses).
