A Friendly Visitor
You might recognized Dulcey (the dog). She stopped by this summer with her mom, Sarah, and met The Darlings. Click here to read the post.
She and Sarah stopped by again last week to say hello.
It was interesting to see how everyone reacted to Dulcey. Ira was a little bit of a scaredy-cat and perched on my Dad's knee, keeping a safe distance.
Charlene was slightly annoyed by this wiggly house guest. She wasn't frightened at all, just a tad ruffled. She seemed a bit confused by Dulcey's body language, but I'm pretty sure it was understood by all parties exactly who was in charge. (The Bean, of course)
Walter, well he was as cool as a cucumber and was happy to make a new acquaintance .
Dulcey seemed thrilled to meet them all.

Brave little Walter. So sweet. As always, thank you for all you do.
ReplyDeleteOMG so cute! I love Walter for being so brave!
ReplyDeleteOh my! How brave you are Walter!
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, Butterbean is in charge -- was there ever any doubt?
Ira - that's a good spot - you get cuddles and a great view of all the action.
Wow, you can really see how Walter has grown when he is next to the dog! Not so itty bitty anymore.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Walter's posture in that last photo. :)
ReplyDeleteWalter is one fearless kitten!
ReplyDeleteNot surprised re: the body language confusion.
ReplyDeleteTake for example, the wagging tail. A dog's word for "hello", but the cat's word for "f--k you."
Pretty serious communications gap when you can't get past "hello."
How lovely! Please, what breed of dog is Dulcey? Her coloring is gorgeous and her ears and face shape are enchanting! She looks strikingly like my sister's dog!
ReplyDeleteThere was a great study I read/wrote about in 2008, on canine/feline communication about how their languages are almost the exact opposite from each other and how it's easiest for them to get along when they've been exposed to the other species at a young age. The study authors compared it to how an American child who grows up bilingual has a much easier time communicating between two languages than one who didn't learn the language until the age of 15.

ps--thanks for foster advice--working on trying to bond with the new 15yr old foster and not feel guilty the 8month olds are at the shelter.
What a great story, the dog is just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteMakin' friends - Walter is doing it right!
ReplyDeleteLinda P.. Mama Sarah says Dulcey is part pitbull and part smooth coat border collie.
ReplyDeleteLove it!!! I really love the last picture with Walter and Dulcey....brave little Walter!
ReplyDeleteHah, this is great!! Well I admire spunky little Walter, but if I were in their paws, I'd probably be right where Mr. Ira is!! :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE dog and cat photos. Thanks for sharing these.
ReplyDeleteWalter is so brave! But Ira is brave, too - I think all 3 of my cats would have been immediately under the nearest piece of furniture!
ReplyDeletecome closer, doggie.
ReplyDeleteWell, who wouldn't wag at the opportunity to meet Charlene Butterbean and the Finches? (I assume that dear Drewie was disapproving from a distance.)
ReplyDeleteI'll second AnnF! Walter's bravery reminds me so much of how the kittens mellowed our adult fosters. Fearless little ones are accepted so quickly!
ReplyDeleteI love how Dulcey's tail is wagging so hard it's blurry!
ReplyDeleteEvery time I visit this blog, I smile. Thanks! =)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful interspecies encounter!
ReplyDeleteAnd the Finch boys are quite something. Showing their distinct purrsonalities!
I <3 Dulcey too!
Oh Wally, Wally, Wally, Wally. You have almost made me forget Francine Darling. (Almost).
ReplyDeleteWalter is our hero. He is SO brave. And So gorjuss too. Wot a package. That boy should do well in life.
ReplyDeleteHow exactly do you introduce Dulcey and the kitties without anyone getting upset?
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh such cute pictures! The size difference is just hilarious!
ReplyDeleteWell, isn't Walter the Brave Little Toaster? Standing (sitting?) his ground, making a new friend. Precious. And good for Ira, knowing he needed a little more distance and a lovey (Grandpa) to comfort him.
ReplyDeleteCats have that "thousand yard stare" -- I think that's what can make even friendly dogs wary of them. They stay stock-still but burn holes in dogs with their laser eyes.
ReplyDeleteIn our house of nice cats and nicer Golden Retrievers, if a cat and a dog meet head-on in a hallway, the dog immediately shifts into reverse and backs away to give the cat passage. Always puts a smile on my face!
I love that Char gets a little ruffled -- after all, it's HER house and if anyone doesn't like it, they can get the heck out!
Terrific shots! Looking forward to catching up on all the IBKC news now that we're back from holiday travel. Happy 2010 to the itty bitties!
