Freedom and Bean

Just this week, we let the Lamms out to explore the main floor of the house.

When introduced to the rest of the house, kittens alway do the exact same thing - they cautiously proceed with their nose to the ground. They sniff out all the corners, check out the perimeter, then lurk under the furniture. Once they've decided it's safe, the run wild.

 FREEDOM!

They sure have been enjoying themselves.

Now that they're out and about, they've been spending a lot more time with Bean, and have been getting to know her a little better. No more puffing-up or hissing like they did on the first day - they are plenty comfortable around her now.

Bean has won their trust.

  5. Aw, Bean's giving the Lamms sparkle ball lessons!! And sit-on-the-windowsill lessons too!

    1. There's no one more qualified than Bean to give kittens those lessons!

  6. They're so tiny! I love seeing three of them on a window sill all at once. That couldn't happen at our house, I'm afraid. We're all way too big!

  7. Zelda is looking more and more like a baby Bean! I wonder if she will take on similar dark coloring like her auntie.

I'm glad that the Lamms are getting along with Charlene now - but I knew it was only a matter of time!

  9. I like the picture with Bean on the "tower" because at least some part of all the Lamms are in shot if you look hard enough. It's like "Where's Waldo?" but with Lamms....

  14. Once the kits have free roam of the house, how much longer do they get to stay with you?

  15. Loving Miss Bean's toe floofs! Any more kitten crunchies for her to munch?

  16. You have the perfect window for cats, though I think the kittens are eyeing your blinds; that would be fun times, attacking the blinds. Bean is luxurious!

  22. That last pik has distinct shades of "It's *my* sparkly ball, kid. Mine. Oh, I know you see it there, and I know you have a mind to play with it, but ask yourself this: "do I feel lucky?"
    Well, do you, kid?

  23. Nice to see they're finally aware Bean has no plans to devour them alive (probably because she doesn't want to be bothered picking their fur out from between her teeth ;D). I love the last pic of her and one of the Lamms.

  24. I want to rub that sweet little white spot on Charlene's chin. Would she let me, I wonder?

  26. Hey, Laurie! Any tips on introducing two cats to each other? I've been following your blog for a while now, and see you talk about it all the time, so I thought I'd see if I couldn't get some expert advice. :D We had a stray cat come by who seems to want to join our home, so once we know that he's feline lukemia-free, we're going to introduce him to our cat, Pippin. They're both males, Pippin is about 4 and the vet said our stray is probably 1 or 2. We're calling the stray Oliver, and he's pretty skinny from his time out and about in the world. We're a little nervous about introducing them, so I thought I'd see if there was anything you knew of, that we could do to make this safer/easier. :) I'd appreciate any advice you could give!

    1. I volunteer at the Tacoma shelter, and the advice I always give folks is to give newbie his own room for a few days. So he'll need his own litter box and food bowls, and of course, lots of snuggles. It's best to have the room somewhere that resident cat can hang out outside of. You can also feed each cat yummy treats on their side of the door. And bring newbie's blanket out to where resident can smell it, and vice versa. Best to take lots of time and have a lot of patience. Your goal should be mutual ignoring, not snuggle pals. Good luck!

    2. Thanks! We've had him in our bathroom for the weekend, but I never thought that would help introduce them. I'll definitely try the blanket idea! Thanks, again. :D

    3. Sound advice, Sarah. They only thing I would add is pay attention to their body language. If they're showing signs of stress, slow it down.

    1. HA! Thanks. It's not spotless. I just don't let any spots get in the photos. It's all an illusion !

  29. I am about to adopt a little boy kitty who looks exactly like Bean did when she was four weeks old. It's really uncanny. He's in foster care with his three brothers and one sister for another week or so until their surgeries.
I can't wait to bring him home!
