Each year I try hard not to turn the furnace on until November. I know that once it's on, there's no turning back, so I hold out as long as I possibly can. Usually by the middle of October we're wearing stocking caps around the house, extra blankets are added to the bed, and by the last week, I usually cave and flip the switch.
But not this year. I think we're going to make. It's 58 degrees in the house, but we're on the home stretch now.
The one perk to keeping it colder is that the cats get extra snuggly. They've left their usual haunts and hide-outs, and now all of their napping hours are spent on or near us, or curled up together. I like how cuddly they are.
Hang on girls, in just five more days it will be November.
Aw, bummer. My Taffy cat made a really rare "snuggle appearance" yesterday - full on lap mode with writhing and purring and head butting.
ReplyDeleteYou mean to tell me that this happened just because the house was a bit colder? Bummer.
We get plenty of snuggles every day - the temperature makes them EXTRA snuggly with us and each other.
DeleteWe get extra snuggles at this time of the year too! Jo x
ReplyDeleteLaurie, you are me in seasonal reverse. As a resident in hot, humid Houston, that's exactly my approach to turning on the a/c for the first time. I know that once I do it's going to be a long, expensive slog until things cool down again.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if I could trick my kitties into being extra snuggly with me (and with each other) by keeping the heat off. Of course, we've had a very mild fall here in Denver (was in the 80s last week!), so they haven't felt the chill at all yet. Plus they are both pretty floofy. :)
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I know it's an illusion but it almost looks like Bean is sitting on top of Wylla! haha!
ReplyDeleteOur house is also still cool (NO HEAT ALLOWED YET!), but my Louie is an a teenage angst stage, and too cool to cuddle. He's enjoying his new tall tower too much to come down to our lowly level to cuddle.
I recognize that look. The "turn the heat on! i'm freezing!" stink eye. Well mastered, ladies.
ReplyDeleteOh yes that's exactly what I was thinking!! Wylla has this annoyed look on her sweet face.
DeleteMy husband has a similar rule but, as it happens, we turned on the heat at our DC-area house for the first time last night (it was 30-something when we got up this a.m.). LG sleeps with us. In the summer, he sprawls out at the end of the bed, under the ceiling fan. In the winter, he finds a gap between us or in the crook of someone's leg or arm. He's been extra-snuggly lately, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteI caved and bought my 11 year old cat a pressure activated kitty warming pad...he never leaves it! I shiver on the couch waiting for my cat warmer to join me, but he is sprawled out on his pad all toasty. He does love to come under the covers for some night time warmth.
ReplyDeleteWe used the "cooler temps = cuddly cats" on our latest rescue girl. Miss Sprite was not trusting of humans at first but keep the house cool...now that was how she learned laps are a great place to sleep! They are warm, give ear knuckles and appreciate a lovely purring engine. But that last picture, you ARE getting the stink eye.
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing every fall/winter. Last year I did not turn on the furnace at all. But I live in Houston and put on more clothes, socks, and a quilt for the couch.

ReplyDeleteYep, our house too - for both heat and air
ReplyDeleteYou are more dedicated than I am - I caved in when the thermostat read 62F :P
ReplyDeleteGood thing those girls are so floofy and devoted to each other or you’d be getting even more of the stink eye!
