Poor Little Bug Got a Bug
This little one gave me a bit of a scare. I noticed Wylla's poo was a little soft on Saturday, so I had been monitoring their litter box closely over the weekend. On Monday morning I collected a sample and got it to our vet to examine. As the day progressed the diarrhea got worse and more frequent (as did my worrying). Her energy level was fine and she was her playful, normal self, but she was bolting to the box every couple of hours.
Our vet isn't in the office on Mondays, so we had to wait until yesterday morning to hear the results. First thing Tuesday she called, and said they weren't able to pinpoint anything specific from her sample, but the bacteria in her poo was definitely off-balance, which could be caused by numerous things.
They squeezed us in for a visit that morning. Much to my surprise, when they put Wylla on the scale, she was up to 7.25 pounds. Two weeks ago at our last visit she was 7.18! I thought for sure she would have weighed less after the past few days of pooping.
Doc checked her over and gave her a dose of sub q fluids to help rehydrate her. She also gave Wylla a B12 shot and sent her home with antibiotics and probiotics too.
The poo situation has been improving, and though we haven't seen a perfect Tootsie Roll in the box yet, it's much thicker and less frequent.
Wylla is very excited about her probiotic, which is sprinkled on top of her food each meal. I guess it makes everything extra delicious, because she sure laps it up fast. The probiotic kind of smells like the seasoning pack from Top Ramen. I wonder if it tastes the same. Her antibiotic smells like artificial banana flavor, which she also seems to enjoy. I'm glad she thinks her medicine is a treat. That certainly makes things easier.
SO, hopefully it was just a little virus, things will continue to improve, and she'll be completely back on track in a day or so.

Here's to a Tootise Roll real soon! You may have to wean her off the Proboitic - I had to with my Maine Coon. Stuff is like Cheetos - way yummy!
ReplyDeleteGet better soon, little Wylla! I'm glad to hear that your meds are so tasty and that you are still your playful (no longer quite so) little self.
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better real soon.
ReplyDeleteSo glad your feeling better, Wylla! And that you enjoy that banana-flavored antibiotic - my kitties aren't crazy about it!
ReplyDeleteSending well wishes to Wylla! I hope it's just a minor infection and she'll be back to normal soon. Let's hope Beany doesn't get it too.
ReplyDeleteJust so you know, it could very well be tied to the fact that she has started eating dry food. A lot of cats have a VERY hard time digesting all of the plant based ingredients and the overly processed proteins and do so much better once they are off it. Dry food is wildly inappropriate to be feeding an obligate carnivore..
ReplyDeleteShe's been getting bits of dry for quite some time, so if that bothered her, it would have happened a long time ago. We've just been upping it recently by literally a few morsels every day. I think there are many opinions surrounding pet nutrition, and I don't feel dry is "wildly inappropriate", nor does my vet who we consult on such matters.
DeleteHugs to Wylla- get better sweet kitty. We love you.
ReplyDeleteToo much birthday celebrating?
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon Wylla !
ReplyDeleteIt sounds grreat with medicine that taste´s like treats :)
We hope tootsie rolls will be making an appearance soon!
ReplyDeleteI can feel the nervous tension on this one vibrating all the way across the country. Happy to hear she is appearing to be doing better and of course acting like her normal self. Sending continued well wishes and good health your way wee one! And to big sis too!
ReplyDeleteHoping it's nothing serious.

ReplyDeleteSending you lots of get well wishes and hugs, Wylla!
ReplyDeleteGentle get-well petting and hugs for Wylla, and a hug and snuggle to Charlene too! XO XO
ReplyDeleteI hate when things go pear-shaped with kitties! XP My furbaby Sam has been on probiotics and I agree they smell like Top Ramen seasoning. I hadn't thought of that at the time, but you're exactly right. It's good she's had energy and is eating well. Whatever's going on, it doesn't sound like it's been too serious. Hopefully, as you said, she'll be back on track in a day or two and leaving Tootsie Rolls in her wake again. Yay on her being 7.25 lbs!
ReplyDeleteGlad things seem to be moving in the right directions with Wylla! My kitty, Buttons, was rushed to the vet with the same symptoms but also a fever of 103! The meds and sub-Q fluids did the trick. Patience and a little dose of worry should make things better.
ReplyDeleteGlad Wylla is mending, and despite this setback she seems to be getting stronger. She's so lucky to have found you.
ReplyDeleteWe have a kitty with similar digestive issues and we find that giving her a little miso with her food helps solve her digestive issues. We just make a bit of soup with a nice dark miso, mash her Wellness in, and let her slurp it up. Solves the pooping issues within the day.
ReplyDeleteLaurie, Check with your vet about plain canned pumpkin for Wylla's diarrhea. I have given it to my cats when they start to have loose stools and it seems to do the trick. Or it could be their tummy is not upset any more. Some folks say pumpkin helps push the hairballs though due to the extra fiber.
ReplyDeleteHealing thoughts and purrs for you, sweet Wylla, that you'll soon be back in tip top shaped!
ReplyDeleteCrossing fingers and paws for the little one to get well soon! <3
ReplyDeleteShe certainly looks like a clever minx !
ReplyDeleteGood health little one.
Wylla, maybe we can just blame it on the sunspots!
ReplyDeleteThere are some people who say that digestive systems can be affected by big shifts in the magnetic fields. We may never know.
I am just glad to hear you had not lost any of your hard-won weight.
I hope Wylla is back to normal soon!
ReplyDeleteWe've dealt with diarrhea in our two girls for a long, long time. One thing the vet told me is that it doesn't tend to cause weight loss in cats, other than possibly through dehydration.
Can you tell me the brand of the enzymes you use? We've been giving my girl plain (supposedly) stuff on her food and she usually turns her nose up at it!
ReplyDeleteHeather, it's called Fortiflora.
