Fun, Fun, Fun in the Morning Sun

DSC_8808

Mornings are always crazy around here. The kittens are served breakfast in their quarters, then once they're done, they race out into the living and dining room and run hard and wild.  A good sleep and big breakfast provide them with the fuel they need to keep going strong for at least an hour, sometimes two, before they crash for their morning nap.

The bright morning sun poured in yesterday and warmed the floors. This exhilarated the kittens, and I got to witness some incredible speeds, bottle brush tails, big pounces, long leaps, and lots of side-winding.

While it's fun to witness this live, it all happens so fast, so I like seeing some of these moments frozen in photographs.

I hope you do, too! Here's a big batch of them!

  2. Every kitten has its own sidewinder style, such busy kittens

  3. Not only are these photos fun but, to me, they are like looking through a window into the future. Because of the long shadows, each one is like a view of the future large cat each kitten will become. Magical!

  6. Oh, Laurie - I've been following for years, and I think these might be the best pictures you've ever taken! The lighting, and the shadows, and the "maneuvers" you captured...impeccable!

  9. The one with one kitten boiing-ing in the air (#9)! Omg, BST. Every time I scroll past it (and nright now too) I chuckle. Also, you have the BEST light, I'm so jelly! I say this as a professional photographer whose apmt faces north & the only time I have direct sunlight it's about a 10" sliver for 45 min... (Also, I'm Swedish & you really shouldn't stick a broody Scandinavian in a dark apartment. :)) Luckilyh, as a photog I know how to light things! Heh.

  10. It was a great choice to make these pics b&w! Since photography IS all about light... That's the mantra from the mantra. And when you remove color, you emphasize just that: light. (I happen to *heart* backlighting too). And shapes and shadows. (Shapes of kittens side-stepping, heh.)

OK, so I think these need to make it onto your wall! (That's another good thing with b&w: it looks really good on a wall!) Maybe a classic triptych? With a mat. I think the square format would look really good, when you'd have three images side by side. They could be fairly small, 5" or so? (I would crop my fave, #9 (little muffin), where you cut out the black in the bottom right corner. Then you still have some of the soft black shape top right (which I like, since it balances out the image.)

Haha, I'm totally invested in your photos and what you should do with them. Your walls! It's just that sometimes you don't know what you have! (It's the same for me. I go back and look at an old contact sheet, and I'm all, why didn't I print this image, when it's so much better than the other one? But sometimes an image need to sit and simmer!) I'm going to check on you, you know. I be sending you a fax in a month.

Isn't it cool that as a side bonus of fostering kittens and having this blog, with the amount of photos you have taken with the old camera?) you have honed your photography skills? I bet you didn't even think about that when you started fostering kittens!!

    1. Thank you for all of this, Eva. I have learned a lot during these 10 years of documenting kittens. With photography though, there is always something to learn. What I realized the other day is that I'm not just documenting them, I am documenting the relationship I have with them. I'm very happy to have this on record!
